Her hand’s been raised for twenty days,
But she’s forgotten what she had to say,
It gets like that when her life goes crazy,
And he’s not there to call her baby.
Nobody knows why she’s all alone,
Curled up on the bathroom floor with the phone,
Her thoughts going numb with the dial tone,
Lost in her tears like Marilyn Monroe.
She could have told you a year ago,
That love was a beautiful picture show,
And when she danced to the music, the ending was right –
But they’re paying for kisses on the corner at night,
And they tell her she’s pretty, and the money is good,
And she gets to feel needed, but she wants to feel loved.
The miracle pills don’t bring back her voice,
She’d call out his name if she had the choice,
She worked for her fix in the back of his Royce,
But she woke up alone in a city of noise.
The sounds of the people are weighing her down,
She needs to get out, get away from the crowd,
But nobody waits and they’re talking so loud,
She only wanted to make them all proud.
She could have told you a year ago,
That love was a beautiful picture show,
And when she danced to the music, the ending was right –
But they’re paying for kisses on the corner at night,
And they tell her she’s pretty, and the money is good,
And she gets to feel needed, but she wants to feel loved.
She’s slipping away,
She can’t remember her name,
She’s got no reason to stay.
She’s starting to pray,
Saying take me away,
Please take me away.
She feels the minutes passing her by,
Sits at the window as she starts to cry,
But all she knows is she doesn’t know why,
And they’re coming to take her away in the night.
And now she’s home to a city of lights,
You don’t need Hollywood for stars to shine,
And she sold her soul but they set it aside,
She might sing in the choir but she’ll never wear white –
It’s red for the bottle she swallowed with wine,
The capsules of love that taught her to fly.
And she used to speak of a year ago,
When love was a beautiful picture show,
And she danced to the music, the ending was right.
But they paid for her kisses on corners at night,
And they said she was pretty, the money was good,
She had to needed, she had to be loved.
