Realized today I’ve been seeing in gray for a while
And I noticed it’s harder to breathe when you’re faking a smile
But while I’m not breathing, and seeing in gray,
All of your problems have faded away -
And if you’re doing okay, I guess I’ll be fine.
Painting the town with a ray of forget me not blue,
Best friend or lover, I’m lost in my thoughts about you.
If I tell you I’m happy, I guess I’m not lying,
Coz as long as I’m painting, then you’ll be alright
And if you’re doing okay, I guess I’ll be fine.
I don’t understand why you say you can’t love me,
Coz sometimes I feel like you might.
When I share my secrets and you share your dreams -
I know I’d kiss you back if you kissed me at night.
Bought myself roses and told you that they were from him,
And I tried writing love songs but couldn’t find how to begin.
Besides if you read them, you’d know who they’re for,
You’d feel bad, we’d be back to square one like before -
But if you’re doing okay, I guess I’ll be fine.
As long as you’re doing okay, I have to be fine.

Your reasons are building blocks,
In a child’s playroom,
Mixed with whiskey on the rocks.
Please open your eyes and look,
We’re on different pages
In a burning book.
And it’s crazy, mystifying,
Even though we both know that
There’s not point in trying.
We’re stuck on a freeway that never ends,
The rainbow only fades and bends -
But we’re falling, falling together.
Let’s pretend this moment can last forever.
My life is a tangled mess,
Like the twisted strap
On my new evening dress.
Our love is a lovely lie,
In a gossip tabloid,
For the whole world to spy.
And you make excuses,
You make the excuses,
Your reasons are lemon drops -
Good til it’s gone, then the feeling stops.
And it’s crazy, mystifying,
Even though we both know that
There’s not point in trying.
We’re stuck on a freeway that never ends,
The rainbow only fades and bends -
But we’re falling, falling together.
Let’s pretend this moment can last forever.
We’re not even in the same parade,
But baby don’t you want to
Come on over, save the day?
And it’s crazy, mystifying,
Even though we both know that
There’s not point in trying.
We’re stuck on a freeway that never ends,
The rainbow only fades and bends -
But we’re falling, falling together.
Let’s pretend this moment can last forever.

Boy I swear we were lovers in another life,
Cause when your lips touched mine, I finally felt alive.
And I know we just met the other day, but
I’m already floating away –
Please tell me that you feel the same way.
Cause it’s nice to think we’ve got a thousand memories
Locked up in our hearts where we can’t see
And I know all your secrets somewhere, there’s nothing to keep.
And our souls already met, our hearts are made and set,
You already belong to me.
Come and dance in the rain with me baby,
Doesn’t matter if it’s storming, as long as we are free,
And I know I’m probably sounding crazy,
But I really think I’m falling in love.
Please tell me that you feel the same way –
Cause it’s nice to know I’m not the only nervous one,
That our two hearts can combine as one,
And somewhere out there planets start to align -
There’s no defying destiny,
You already belong to me.
And I don’t think I’ve felt this way before.
And before we even start I’m wanting more, more, more.
Boy I swear we were lovers in another life,
Cause when your lips touched mine, I finally felt alive.
Come and dance in the rain with me baby,
Maybe I’m crazy but I’m crazy about you,
Our souls have met, our hearts are set,
You have always belonged to me.

Her eyes are blue, her hair is long,
And she’s the reason he writes love songs.
Her name is Amy, he thinks she’s lovely,
Oh Amy high above me -
And I don’t know just
Where to go from here.
He calls her every day,
Says Baby how’re things going?
He writes her love songs,
Just to make her dreams come true,
And I don’t know exactly
What I’ll do.
Her skin is fair, her lips are red,
She’s a goddess sleeping in a mortal’s bed,
He brings her roses, he makes the coffee,
He wants his Amy, he’ll never love me,
And I don’t quite believe
He’s ever moving on.
And last night he got down on one knee,
Said Amy will you marry me,
You’re all I’ve ever wanted, oh,
Amy be my wife.
Cause Amy is beautiful, Amy’s his life,
She’s his muse, she’s his angel,
She’s gonna be his fairy tale bride,
And I don’t want to be the one
To chase his sunshine away,
So it looks like his perfect Amy
Is gonna stay.

Her hand’s been raised for twenty days,
But she’s forgotten what she had to say,
It gets like that when her life goes crazy,
And he’s not there to call her baby.
Nobody knows why she’s all alone,
Curled up on the bathroom floor with the phone,
Her thoughts going numb with the dial tone,
Lost in her tears like Marilyn Monroe.
She could have told you a year ago,
That love was a beautiful picture show,
And when she danced to the music, the ending was right –
But they’re paying for kisses on the corner at night,
And they tell her she’s pretty, and the money is good,
And she gets to feel needed, but she wants to feel loved.
The miracle pills don’t bring back her voice,
She’d call out his name if she had the choice,
She worked for her fix in the back of his Royce,
But she woke up alone in a city of noise.
The sounds of the people are weighing her down,
She needs to get out, get away from the crowd,
But nobody waits and they’re talking so loud,
She only wanted to make them all proud.
She could have told you a year ago,
That love was a beautiful picture show,
And when she danced to the music, the ending was right –
But they’re paying for kisses on the corner at night,
And they tell her she’s pretty, and the money is good,
And she gets to feel needed, but she wants to feel loved.
She’s slipping away,
She can’t remember her name,
She’s got no reason to stay.
She’s starting to pray,
Saying take me away,
Please take me away.
She feels the minutes passing her by,
Sits at the window as she starts to cry,
But all she knows is she doesn’t know why,
And they’re coming to take her away in the night.
And now she’s home to a city of lights,
You don’t need Hollywood for stars to shine,
And she sold her soul but they set it aside,
She might sing in the choir but she’ll never wear white –
It’s red for the bottle she swallowed with wine,
The capsules of love that taught her to fly.
And she used to speak of a year ago,
When love was a beautiful picture show,
And she danced to the music, the ending was right.
But they paid for her kisses on corners at night,
And they said she was pretty, the money was good,
She had to needed, she had to be loved.

I thought I saw your face today
For the first time in a long time.
I thought that you had gone away,
And that I would be fine.
But when you wouldn’t meet my eyes,
Had me looking at my feet,
I knew your words like hands of fire
Had left scars all over me.
I’m falling I never healed,
Spent my time with the pain concealed.
But long sleeves cannot cover what you did to me,
It’s on my soul for the world to see.
I remember you fading fast,
Pretending you were there.
I was waiting for things to last,
But you only pretended to care.
And brick by brick I built a wall,
To save me from people like you.
Never dreaming it would fall -
It’s easier to play the fool.
I’m falling I never healed,
Spent my time with the pain concealed.
But long sleeves cannot cover what you did to me,
It’s on my soul for the world to see.
And now I can’t breathe, I can’t breathe,
I saw your face and I can’t breathe,
I saw your face and I
I’m falling I never healed,
Spent my time with the pain concealed.
But long sleeves cannot cover what you did to me,
It’s on my soul for the world to see.
It’s on my soul for the world to see.

These days I’m finding it harder to breathe,
My head’s always pounding, knees always weak,
Retracing my steps, I’m losing my mind -
There’s something I’m missing that I’ve got to find.
Leave a ransom note so my heart can come home,
I’d do anything just so I could move on,
I know you have it, but you’ve got the proof.
So leave a message, babe, I’m begging you.
I can’t figure out just where to go now,
I’m frozen in place, can’t figure out how.
I’m falling fast when our song comes on,
Sleepless at night, praying for the dawn.
Leave a ransom note so my heart can come home,
I’d do anything just so I could move on,
I know you have it, but you’ve got the proof.
So leave a message, babe, I’m begging you.
If you can’t come back then let me go -
You’re holding me down and you don’t even know.
And maybe someday I’ll be ready to fly,
But while you’ve got my heart I can’t even try.
Leave a ransom note so my heart can come home,
I’d do anything just so I could move on,
I know you have it, but you’ve got the proof.
So leave a message, babe, I’m begging you.
You an’t keep me forever,
If you’re not gonna love me better.
You’re holding me captive,
But I’d rather be flying free.
Leave a ransom note so my heart can come home,
I’d do anything just so I could move on,
I know you have it, but you’ve got the proof.
So leave a message, babe, I’m begging you.

Now I lay me down to sleep,
Bed is empty, not a peep,
No dog, no man, no company tonight -
Coz you left me broken, baby,
Why’d you leave me all alone?
Frozen, baby, this house is not home.
Coz all I’ve got is a broken box,
To lay my dreams in.
All I’ve got is a brand new lock,
On a heart-shaped box,
Labled love me, love me,
And love me again -
It’s saying maybe I need to love again.
Now I open up my eyes,
From my bed of stardust rise,
It’s a brand new day, and I don’t know what to say,
Coz sometimes I wonder why I try at all -
Wonder when I’ll take my next fall,
Right into my broken box,
To lay my dreams in.
All I’ve got is a brand new lock,
On a heart-shaped box,
Labeled love me, love me
And love me again,
Saying maybe I need to love again.
Lay me down to sleep in a bed of roses,
Get some glue and fix me up til I’m ready to shine,
Polish my pride just a little bit,
Higher, higher, higher –
Into my broken box,
To lay my dreams in.
All I’ve got is a brand new lock,
On a heart-shaped box,
Labeled love me, love me
And love me again,
Saying maybe I need to love again.
Saying maybe I need to love again.

Watching you stare out the window
At the cars going by,
Counting the days til you’re gone
And I’m wondering why?
I know you’ve dreamed of
Finding the perfect
Girl to adore you,
Who’ll still love you back –
And I’m stitting here waiting
For you to see, that it’s me,
That it’s me.
I need you, I’ll be there for you,
It’s my turn now,
I won’t let you down – it’s me.
I see you looking through faces,
To find where she is.
Holding my breath when you see a
Girl you think will fit.
I know you’re hurting,
Well I’m hurting too,
It’s time to move on,
And it’s all up to you –
And I’m stitting here waiting
For you to see, that it’s me,
That it’s me.
I need you, I’ll be there for you,
It’s my turn now,
I won’t let you down – it’s me.
Can you do it?
Do you believe?
That trusting me,
Will set you free…
And I’m stitting here waiting
For you to see, that it’s me,
That it’s me.
I need you, I’ll be there for you,
It’s my turn now,
I won’t let you down – it’s me.
It’s me.

Once there was a little girl,
Watching the prosperity
Of people selling bottled things,
On her big flat silver screen,
Wondering what they would say,
To make her sadness go away -
And she said,
Mommy when I grow up,
I wanna catch a butterfly.
Keep it in a crystal jar,
Instead of dancing in the sky.
Maybe then the world will see
That beauty comes imperfectly,
And we all pay a penalty
For keeping it from being free.
There was a woman,
Watching a construction crew
Putting up a skyscraper,
Where her favorite tree once grew.
Wondering what that tree
Ever did to them.
And she said,
Someday when I have the time,
I wanna catch a butterfly,
Suffocate it in a jar,
Completely accidentally.
Maybe then the world will see,
That nature lingers quietly,
But we all pay a penalty
For killing it off early.
There is a busy world,
I know that much is true.
But if we could take the time,
When our day is through.
We could say,
Right now while we have the time,
Let’s go out catching butterflies,
Keep them all in crystal jars,
Instead of dancing in the sky.
And maybe then the world will see
That beauty comes imperfectly,
And we will pay our penalty
By letting them go free…
